Christ or the Constitution?
With the Democratic debates going on and the revving up for another presidential election, there is a lot of emotion and clamor from both sides of the aisle. Conservatives hail President Trump as the savior of America, while liberals loathe him and compare him to genocidal dictators.
Conservatives rightly complain about the corruption that is rampant in D.C. There is ample evidence of power hungry politicians who will stop at nothing in order to gain and keep their positions. They abuse their office, sometimes criminally, and tyrannize the American people.
Prominent voices on the right such as Glenn Beck deem the current political problems as a Constitutional crisis. They incessantly push the narrative that in order to return to sanity we must return to Constitutional orthodoxy. They insist that we must rally around the flag and the Declaration of Independence.
While there is certainly nothing wrong with patriotism, the American civil religion of both sides is nothing short of idolatry. We tell ourselves that we are a Christian nation simply because we have "In God We Trust" on our currency. We believe that the American Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were somehow divinely inspired; we have never questioned it, but we most certainly should.
How can a legal document composed of mostly lawyers be divinely inspired? How can a document where God was deliberately voted out be in line with God's law? How can anything written by someone who vehemently denies the miraculous, reduces Christ to a good moral teacher, and strives for an absolute liberation of civil government from any religious influence find favor with the King of kings and Lord of lords?
From the days of the founding 'til now, America has continued on a spiritual and moral decline. The pornography epidemic, sex-trafficking, and LGBTQ agenda are more than sufficient evidence. Americans pay more reverence to what is made of human hands than to God, especially the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
It is foolish to look for the salvation of America in the Constitution or Declaration. It is foolish to look for salvation in presidents, politicians, judges or human laws. It is foolish to look for salvation in economics.
The Constitution never has and never will have the power to save us. But there is hope in Christ Jesus.
The fact of the matter is that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. If we truly want salvation, we must turn to Him, and only him. Jesus won our redemption by his Passion, shedding every last drop of His precious Blood out of love for us.
Only Christ can heal the wounds that we have caused. If we truly want the redemption and salvation of America, it is absolutely vital that we put on sackcloth and ashes. We must fall to our knees at the foot of the Cross and beg for mercy.
