Second Sunday of Advent: Prepare the Way of the Lord
We are living in turbulent times. The Church is under attack
from both without and within. The source of the attack we know to be ultimately
demonic. Satan’s agenda is growing in boldness.
Many of us are tempted to despair. We are tempted to fall
into anxiety. We fight amongst ourselves and lash out in anger. This anger is
certainly justifiable, but we mustn’t lose hope.
The season of Advent, the beginning of the new liturgical
year, is a reminder that Jesus is our salvation. He is the source of all our
comfort. He is the source of all our power and the protector of His Church.
Our part, like John the Baptist before us, is to prepare the
way for Jesus to enter the world anew. We are to humble ourselves through
prayer and fasting, not only for ourselves personally, but for our families,
our communities, our countries.
Only Jesus, the Divine Physician, can heal the damage caused
by sin. Only Jesus can eradicate the darkness that feels overwhelming at times,
especially now in our scandal-ridden Church.
Christ is the one who
purifies our minds. With purified minds united to His, we become one with Him
and so of one mind with each other. We are united in the bond of charity as the
communion of saints, both in heaven and on earth. We help each other to stay on
the right path and invite others to join our ranks.
Yes, our destiny is ultimately in Heaven. God wants us to
choose to love Him and be united to Him in perfect joy. When we remember this
and keep it always on our minds, we realize that this present darkness is but a
passing thing. His love and His mercy are infinitely greater than anything than
Satan and his minions can throw at us. Therefore, we can laugh at the devil and
see his attacks as futile.
So remember the comfort of our God. Remember the power of
His infinite love. Remember that He is our salvation and our strength and allow
Him to fill you with heavenly joy and so laugh at the devil and his impotence
against the mercy of our God.
